TWA Celebrate Black History Month and Wear Red Day

Throughout October, pupils at TWA have been celebrating Black History Month through a variety of engaging and meaningful activities.

As part of the nationwide 'Show Racism the Red Card' campaign, pupils came to school wearing something red to demonstrate their support for equality and inclusion. They learned about the purpose of the campaign, why it is important, and how everyone can play a role in challenging racism. Across the school, pupils created their own red cards and posters to promote anti-racism messages, while some pupils also had the opportunity to attend a workshop at the Coventry Building Society Arena linked to the campaign.

In lessons, pupils explored the lives and achievements of influential historical figures, including Rosa Parks, learning about her significant contribution to the Civil Rights Movement and the lasting impact she has had on society. Pupils discussed the progress that has been made over time, as well as the ongoing challenges of racism, discrimination and inequality that can still be experienced today. They also learned about a range of other inspirational Black figures from history and modern times, celebrating their achievements and contributions to society.

Pupils further celebrated African cultures through a range of creative and practical activities. They produced artwork inspired by traditional African designs and had the opportunity to taste a selection of African foods. We would like to extend a special thank you to Segun and our Year 12 pupils, who kindly prepared and shared these delicious dishes with both staff and students.

Our Black History Month activities have provided valuable opportunities for pupils to learn, reflect, celebrate diversity and promote respect for all members of our community.
